Both the classic local Dane County Farmers' Market and my very local Westside Community Market open for the season tomorrow morning. Other area markets will open soon; see a list of them here, in the Farm Fresh Atlas.
As the only non-vendor on the board of the Westside Market, I'm very biased. Others tell me that the Westside Market has easier and free parking, and is far more accessible for folks dependent on stroller and wheelchair wheels to get around in the Market. For older folks, the Capitol Square can be a very difficult effort.
I don't drink the stuff myself, but others enjoy the fact that the Westside Market offers free high-end coffee. You can buy lattes and other fancy drinks from the many vendors across the street from the Dane County Market on city property.
Some foodies like the fact that the high-end produce is available later on the Westside, whereas at the Dane County Market, the restaurants often buy up the scarce and choicest stuff before 8 am.
The Dane County Market is an event, with musicians busking and crafts sold, both across the street on city property. It's the place to take your out-of-town visitors. The Westside Market is the place to meet your middle-aged friends from Middleton on their way to Borders.
The Dane County Farmers' Market has the Capitol building, which has all that marble, a dome, and nice bathrooms. The Westside Community Market has the Department of Transportation building, which is locked, and a port-o-san from Bucky's.
No dogs allowed at either Market.
