It was horrifying to read the comments of Ohio Republican Ken Blackwell, who claims to be a candidate for governor. Blackwell incumbent, Secretary of State, said:
I think homosexuality is a lifestyle, it's a choice, and that lifestyle can be changed. I think it is a transgression against God's law, God's will. The reality is, again...that I think we make choices all the time. And I think you make good choices and bad choices in terms of lifestyle. Our expectation is that one's genetic makeup might make one more inclined to be an arsonist or might make one more inclined to be a kleptomaniac. Do I think that they can be changed? Yes.
Ralph G. Neas, President, People for the American Way said:
Equating gay people with violent criminals is a surprising level of ugliness even for someone with Ken Blackwell’s record of promoting second-class citizenship for gay and lesbian Ohioans. It’s clear that Ken Blackwell isn’t running to be a governor who represents all Ohioans.
Neas is kinder and gentler than me. If they had asked me to comment, the reply would be:
There was a time when many Americans believed that the genetic make up of an individual determined the color of one's skin and also correlated to criminality. The ignorance of those troubled and ignorant times is still found in men like Ken Blackwell.
As a Wisconsinite, I would like to know the views of Mark Green, our own Republican candidate for Governor, on Blackwell's comments.
