For an exquisitely simple but clear explanation of the stem cell issue from the viewpoint of a researcher, we have Tenneille Ludwig's Human embryonic stem cells: The view from the lab bench. If there is any gap in your basic understanding of stem cell research, read this.
It wouldn't do much good for Mark Green to read the article. Green, the Republican candidate for governor, is floundering with press release after press release. Green is trying to stay on the side of science usually reserved for wizards and sorcerers, but appear to be supportive of stem cell research. It is not working. As Xoff notes:
He (Green) pledged $25-million to try to find a way to create new stem cells without destroying embryos.
The problem is that the great new breakthrough he wants to fund just admitted that it destroyed all of the embryos in its project.
What I found most revealing about Green's stem cell feint is that he didn't even bother to contact anybody at WisCell, the UW's stem cell research institution - to like maybe get an idea of what the most promising alternative avenues of stem cell research might be. That shows what a phony, to-be-forgotten-after-the-campaign pledge this really is.
Let's see - he ignores laws he doesn't like (i.e. the election commission's ruling that he has to divest that $468,000) and ignores scientific expertise. Hmmmm.... which current unitary executive do you think that Greenis modelling himself after?
