Today the need for footnotes and links is unnecessary. This is a society lead by charlatans and fools, very dangerous fools, who use the vulnerability of the people who trust them to manipulate.
We follow a liar. He lied us into a war in Iraq. He lied about the need to take away our liberty when the Congress adopted the phony Patriots Act. He lied about the firings of the eight U.S. attorneys.* He is badly flawed.
He is a product of our culture and he is its purveyor.
This is a nation that finds it too expensive to house, shelter, and treat its millions of mentally ill citizens. This is a nation that finds it expedient to foul the Constitution but cannot afford a simple security plan to lock down a campus of 25,000.
In the meantime we ignore the documented studies that make it clear that the more guns present in a society, the more people die. Simple enough. And while the NRA mentions Cuba, North Korea and Nazi Germany to support their case, they fail to acknowledge Britain, Japan, and countless other democracies including the Scandinavian nations that carefully regulate firearms.
The tragedy in Virginia is the product of a demented shooter who is the product of a society of a confused society. Our failure is not that we learn from Hollywood or gangster rappers, but that we do not learn the role of the social compact which is an essential element of our heritage.
* Too easy not to document.
