At the very hour on Friday while Barry Orton was posting Best Name for New Madison School: Jeffrey Erlanger, I was telling my dear friend Muriel Simms that I was firmly in her corner supporting the naming of the new Madison school after Anna Mae Mitchell.
Anna Mae Mitchell was the most ordinary and the most extraordinary woman. She was the epitome of a citizen. Asking for nothing but justice and social advancement for all people she went about her life humbly. She never asked for recognition, for she never expected it. She did expect everyone to contribute.
There are thousands of Anna Mae Mitchells in our community. They are heroes who go unrecognized, but never let a day go by without making sure they made the world is a better place - perhaps helping a lonely neighbor down the block or fighting for world peace.
Whether Anna Mae Mitchell or Jeff Erlanger is honored with a school name, all of us, especially those dedicated to making Madison a better place, though they go unrecognized, will be well served.
